Located in Haut-Rhin (North-East of France), Mont-Dauphin was built ex nihilo by Vauban to make up for the defensive gap in the area after the loss of Brisach (stronghold located beyond the Rhine) in 1697. Vauban started the construction of the city in an octagon layout in 1699 and equipped it amongst others with a citadel, 8 bastioned towers and many garrison houses located near the ramparts to protect inhabitants. The city was restored after the American bombardments in 1945.
